Barry Shulman: The Poker Magazine Mogul

Barry Shulman is synonymous to the publication, Card Player Magazine. He and many of his friends in the pro poker circuit consider the publication as the bible of poker industry.

Being a strong poker player himself, Shulman has accumulated almost $ 1 million in his tournament games. However, nowadays he opts to focus his time and efforts in his business as a publisher than engaging in poker tournaments. For twenty five years, Shulman was busy with his real estate business in Seattle, until the mid 90's came. He retired and went to Las Vegas, and that's where he became interested in playing poker. He read the Card Player on a regular basis in order to learn more about poker. After a while, Shulman bought the publication with his retirement money.

The Card Player publication started out from a humble beginning before Shulman purchased the company. Under his management, the publication grew and business boomed. The Card Player Magazine reached the news stands in 2003, and from that year on the publication and market grew. Shulman's magazine runs twenty six times annually, and the website counterpart, CardPlayer.com has tons of information about tournaments and game tactics.

Some of the great pros have been featured in the columns and articles of Shulman's magazine and he himself writes articles for his own publication. Shulman says he is now working harder than he did before his retirement. He's not even into serious poker playing anymore due to lack of time in his busy schedule.

However, he still loves the game, but doing business that deals with card games, particularly poker, is much more fun nowadays. The magazine's corporate name is now Card Player Media, and it publishes two other magazines namely the Card Player College and Card Player Europe. Collectively, Shulman's magazine company circulates 500,000 publications a month all over the world.

Shulman has always been and will remain an authority on poker. He is much aware of the fact that the public's sudden interest in poker has been the product of the World Poker Tour being broadcast on television. He has also taken note of the growing popularity of online gaming, particularly of online poker, has given many players the ability to play with ease and tension-free at the safety of their homes; and the interest of many young players who are into the internet and gadgets have made more following on online poker as well.
